News: research trip to Hawai‘i

In June, Billie Lythberg (Associate Investigator) and Emily Parr (Post-Doc) visited Hawai‘i for the Artefacts of Relations project.

Billie and Emily travelled to Hawai‘i to conduct archival research, photographing models of hale/fale/fare/‘are and spending time with Te Rangihīroa’s field notes and card catalogue in the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. We also had the opportunity to visit Hale Pi‘o, designed by project collaborator Sean Connelly, in Waipi‘o Valley. Hale Pi‘o is a reciprocal frame structure that integrates traditional Hawaiian hale lashing techniques. It was designed in collaboration between After Oceanic and Leong Leong. It’s hosted by HŌ‘Ā, an organisation that hold cultural enrichment programmes for Kanaka ‘Ōiwi youth, signalling the hale’s importance not only as an architectural endeavour, but also a locus for the nurturing of cultural practices and connection.
